AGGRESSIVE FUNCTIONAL MEDICAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY AS A POWERFUL PART OF YOUR CANCER BATTLE PLAN
Many people have beat cancer! I offer FUNCTIONAL MEDICAL NUTRITION and mind-body techniques to help support immune function, a healthy weight, appetite & quality of life, as well as reduce risk of recurrences in patients who are battling cancer, while also addressing the sum total of health issues that affect their physical & mental wellness. The nutritional programs I create for my patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are highly individualized & designed to complement the therapies they are receiving from their medical team. When patients consult me I review with them their medical history, explore & identify possible degenerative pathways of the body (roots of the disease process), & work to remove these factors as barriers to wellness.
My roles as a team member assisting patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are to:
(1) Help educate them about how nutritional therapy can complement and improve the success of various treatment options and empower them to go forth with more confidence that they will make the best choice given their particular situation.
The nutritional programs I design for my patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are designed to complement other therapies but are not offered as cancer therapy.

My best advice to the cancer patient is to find a supportive friend or family member to help encourage you and to be your confidant.
Next, while you are collecting information and interviewing physicians to help you on your journey with cancer, take a first step to improving your nutritional status and rid your diet and physical environment of as many cancer-risk increasing agents as possible.
Get rid of acid-forming liquids, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks as well as sugar and dairy products, hydrogenated fats (damaged, oxidized fats).
Reducing consumption of gluten-containing grains and dairy products will help reduce inflammation.
Choose more organic foods when possible.
Avoid as many personal care products and toiletries that contain chemicals as possible. It is especially important to avoid parabens and triclosan. Women who have hormone-sensitive cancers should be especially careful to avoid chemicals with estrogen-like activity in the body.

I was first formally introduced to exercise science by one of my biology teacher in high school, Coach Hank Williford, PhD (now at Auburn University) who shared his specialized knowledge with us enthusiastically, as he was also completing his graduate work at the time.

AYURVEDA is the 3000-year-old science of diet, healing and health maintenance that originated in India. Ayurveda looks at food in a way that goes beyond its content of vitamins, minerals, protein, fats and carbohydrate, to recognize that all foods have powerful energies that affect the mind, body and spirit. The masters of Ayurveda have described the human body and the body of the universe as composed of prana—the primal energy, the vital life force that manifests in the form of earth, water, fire, air and ether. Any imbalance of these elements in our body is experienced as illness, discomfort or pain. And these elements are kept in harmony by a healthy body that consumes them through breath, food water, sunshine, exercise and sleep. The power of vegetarian foods fully manifests only when used in harmony with your unique constitution.
When a diet is designed with the proper macronutrient ratio (the proper amount of carbohydrate, fat and protein, any food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances, anti-inflammatory in nature) and then further adjusted to be complementary to your constitution based upon Ayurvedic nutrition concepts, you have a diet plan that will serve you very well, both in resolving imbalances in your health and in improving your energy level.
I provide my patients with not only nutritional recommendations for eating more Ayurvedically but suggestions for healthy lifestyle practices that follow ancient Ayurvedic principles for balancing the body, mind and spirit, These include suggestions for exercise, therapeutic use of oils, oral hygiene and quite time/meditation.
WHAT IS THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR AYURVEDA? The five elements, earth, water, fire, air and ether, come together to create three basic constitution types: vata, pitta and kapha. The particular combination of energies present, earth, water, fire, air and ether, when we enter this world at birth is known in Ayurveda as our innate constitution or prakruti. What we do with our constitution is up to us. When these elements combine in varying proportions and strengths, they create doshas, or our mind-body constitution: vata, pitta and kapha. If air and ether predominate in your constitution, you are Vata in nature. If fire and water take the lead in you mind-body makeup, Pitta is the result. If water and earth hold ascendancy in your body and mind at birth, Kapha is your constitution. Each constitution has different needs. When we meet these needs we improve our chances of feeling balanced and enjoying good health and peace of mind.
