Pre-Diabetes, Diabetes & Complications; Pancreatitis

  • Just some of the complications of diabetes are difficulty healing, in general, gastroporesis, poor circulation to the extremities/legs and feet; foot ulcers, nerve damage & nerve pain (neuropathy and neuralgia) retinopathy. Bleeding behind the retina is common.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreatitis) requires control of carbohydrate intake, systemic inflammation and supplementation of enzymes in order to resolve. Serious cases require prompt medical intervention from your MD. I provide customized care to complement the care you are receiving from your physician for pancreatitis.
  • Patients are given customized meal plans that match and improve their body's ability to metabolize carbohydrate. Nutrition plans are not only carbohydrate-controlled but are low in fructose and specific in nature to the amount and type of fat consumed,as to lower systemic inflammation and to give the body the proper fatty acids for improving cell membrane health.  I love being able to makeover your favorite foods into a fat-burning, blood sugar lowering ally!
  • A number of factors contribute to the development of complications of diabetes. In functional medical nutritional therapy for diabetes, we address how to safely optimize nitric oxide production by the blood vessels, (which helps the blood vessels to become healthier), how to improve the body's production of its two most powerful antioxidants (glutathione and superoxide dismutase) and work to reestablish a balance of essential fatty acids in the body while ensuring that they are metabolized properly.
  • The body is provided with the micronutrients it needs to improve carbohydrate metabolism and to further reduce systemic inflammation, especially inflammation in the cardiovascular system.  It is especially important to improve the health of the smallest blood vessels in the body because these are found in the brain and kidney, which are so often affected in diabetes, resulting in issues with cognition (Problems with memory, dementia), kidney disease (diabetic nephropathy) and retinopathy. Autoimmunity is addressed because we are now finding that this is often a contributing factor to the development of even Type II diabetes.

Adrenal & Thyroid Optimization/Balance

  • Targeted nutritional therapy to help optimize thyroid & adrenal balance.  Highly individualized plans to specifically address the root issues of suboptimal function of these glands.
  • Adrenal fatigue is rampant in our modern society. It is often experienced by those with fibromyalgia, allergies or yeast overgrowth. Many people struggle for months or years with imbalanced adrenal function when well-directed nutritional therapy could be highly effective.
  • Subclinical thyroid function is very common. Few patients have had a comprehensive thyroid panel and, thus, they may never receive the tests that would provide the needed date for a correct diagnosis. Autoimmune thyroid is commonly overlooked. In addition, medications can help replace hormones that are lacking but they do not nourish the thyroid and adrenal glands, improving their health. In addition, our endocrine glands (the thyroid, in particular) are highly vulnerable to heavy metal accumulation and mineral deficiencies.

Help With Your Cancer Battle Plan

To Complement The Care You Are Receiving From Your Doctors:

Whereas I offer state-of-the-art guidance for patients who deeply desire an aggressive nutritional component to their cancer battle plan I also offer PALLIATIVE NUTRITIONAL THERAPY (that focuses on powerfully reducing nausea,  pain/inflammation, improving appetite, digestion and reducing gastrointestinal symptoms, increasing muscle mass, improving various lab tests values--such as serum albumin and improving energy level and sleep quality as much as possible.) These changes can profoundly improve a patient's quality of life.

CLICK HERE to read more about this approach to determine if Palliative Nutritional care may be the best fit for you or your loved one.

Many people have beat cancer!  I offer FUNCTIONAL MEDICAL NUTRITION and mind-body techniques to help support immune function, a healthy weight, appetite & quality of life, as well as reduce risk of recurrences in patients who are battling cancer, while also addressing the sum total of health issues that affect their physical & mental wellness. The nutritional programs I create for my patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are highly individualized & designed to complement the therapies they are receiving from their medical team. When patients consult me I review with them their medical history, explore & identify possible degenerative pathways of the body (roots of the disease process), & work to remove these factors as barriers to wellness.

My roles as a team member assisting patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are to:

(1) Help educate them about how nutritional therapy can complement and improve the success of various treatment options and empower them to go forth with more confidence that they will make the best choice given their particular situation.

The nutritional programs I design for my patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer are designed to complement other therapies but are not offered as cancer therapy.

(2) My second role in helping a patient who have received a diagnosis of cancer is to review his or her medical history, explore and identify possible degenerative pathways of the body (roots of the disease process), and work to remove these factors as barriers to wellness.

These factors create imbalances in the fundamental controls of the body:

  • Wrong food choices
  • Wrong ratios of protein, fat and carbohydrate
  • Incorrect balance of vitamins and minerals

Fundamental controls of the body include:

  • Imbalances in the autonomic nervous system
  • Electrolytes
  • Prostaglandins
  • Alkaline-acidity
  • The carbo-oxidative systems
  • Lipo-oxidative system

Disturbances in these fundamental homeostatic controls result in metabolic dysfunction, namely

metabolism inefficiency of protein, fat or carbohydrate, and other metabolic inefficiencies.

These metabolic dysfunctions result in subclinical health complaints, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Constipation
  • Aches/pain
  • Feeling generally malaised
  • Frequent illness, and low energy

These subclinical health complaints often eventually result in chronic degenerative diseases, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Colitis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease
  • Sometimes even cancer

Just a few nutritional strategies to help patients, naturally, improve detoxification pathways, their immune function, cell membrane structure, and make the body a less hospitable place for cancer cell include:

  • Proper macronutrient ratio,
  • Vitamin and mineral balance
  • High quality, pure water
  • Botanical extracts, herbs and phytonutrients

My best advice to the cancer patient is to find a supportive friend or family member to help encourage you and to be your confidant.

Next, while you are collecting information and interviewing physicians to help you on your journey with cancer, take a first step to improving your nutritional status and rid your diet and physical environment of as many cancer-risk increasing agents as possible.

Get rid of acid-forming liquids, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks as well as sugar and dairy products, hydrogenated fats (damaged, oxidized fats).

Reducing consumption of gluten-containing grains and dairy products will help reduce inflammation.

Choose more organic foods when possible.

Avoid as many personal care products and toiletries that contain chemicals as possible. It is especially important to avoid parabens and triclosan. Women who have hormone-sensitive cancers should be especially careful to avoid chemicals with estrogen-like activity in the body.

Developing highly-individualized nutritional programs to complement the work you are doing with the oncologist or other physician is available through my private practice.  Nutrition programs for patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer will receive an in-depth medical history/interview and a

Review of mechanisms that may underlie immune system dysfunction,

Karen Bishop, RDN, LD, on yoga...

“I fell in love with yoga when I was a little girl.  I practiced on my dark blue exercise mat with Lilias Folan on “Lilias, Yoga and You” when I was nine-- when she was on Public Television.  I began to develop an instinctual knowledge about my body and about the chakras, although I did not have those names in my vocabulary then!  Yoga has been a friend for over 45 years, always waiting patiently for me to return when I stayed away for too long.  Yoga practice is such a useful tool for making positive lifestyle changes successfully. It is the ultimate mind-body medicine. It improves our success in making dietary changes, sticking to and managing our time more effectively."

Ayurvedic Nutrition

Have you heard about The Vedic Care Charitable Trust? It is a global initiative for the well being, retirement and hospice of vaisnavas. (I am on the Medical Advisory Team as a volunteer.) I invite you to donate or offer your service...as I did. Visit www.vediccarecharity.org

AYURVEDA is the 3000-year-old science of diet, healing and health maintenance that originated in India.  Ayurveda looks at food in a way that goes beyond its content of vitamins, minerals, protein, fats and carbohydrate, to recognize that all foods have powerful energies that affect the mind, body and spirit.  The masters of Ayurveda have described the human body and the body of the universe as composed of prana—the primal energy, the vital life force that manifests in the form of earth, water, fire, air and ether.  Any imbalance of these elements in our body is experienced as illness, discomfort or pain.  And these elements are kept in harmony by a healthy body that consumes them through breath, food water, sunshine, exercise and sleep.  The power of vegetarian foods fully manifests only when used in harmony with your unique constitution.

When a diet is designed with the proper macronutrient ratio (the proper amount of carbohydrate, fat and protein, any food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances, anti-inflammatory in nature) and then further adjusted to be complementary to your constitution based upon Ayurvedic nutrition concepts, you have a diet plan that will serve you very well, both in resolving imbalances in your health and in improving your energy level.

I provide my patients with not only nutritional recommendations for eating more Ayurvedically but suggestions for healthy lifestyle practices that follow ancient Ayurvedic principles for balancing the body, mind and spirit, These include suggestions for exercise, therapeutic use of oils, oral hygiene and quite time/meditation.

WHAT IS THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR AYURVEDA? The five elements, earth, water, fire, air and ether, come together to create three basic constitution types: vata, pitta and kapha.  The particular combination of energies present, earth, water, fire, air and ether, when we enter this world at birth is known in Ayurveda as our innate constitution or prakruti.  What we do with our constitution is up to us.  When these elements combine in varying proportions and strengths, they create doshas, or our mind-body constitution: vata, pitta and kapha. If air and ether predominate in your constitution, you are Vata in nature.  If fire and water take the lead in you mind-body makeup, Pitta is the result.  If water and earth hold ascendancy in your body and mind at birth, Kapha is your constitution.  Each constitution has different needs. When we meet these needs we improve our chances of feeling balanced and enjoying good health and peace of mind.
